What’s in a name?

 In Blog, Domain Name
As Shakespeare wrote….What’s in a [domain] name? If you are in the process of starting your own business or creating a website, one of the very first steps you need to take is to find a domain name!

What should you choose to have after the “www” part of your website?  This is a crucial choice! When picking a domain name go with your company name or your most relevant keyword (but only if your company name is not available). People who search for your company online will first put in your company name in the search engine.  Search Engines (like Google) will give you “credit” for keywords (including your company name) in your domain name.  So the first option is always to use your company name for the domain.  Second best are keywords that are in your company name.

When you do find and secure a domain name (that is not being used by anyone else),  then register it and claim it!  Then it’s all yours!!  You can take your domain name to any host or server and it will always be recognized as yours!  You may also want to consider purchasing multiple domain name extensions (.com, .biz, .org, and .info).  This stops competition or anyone else from buying those up and creating a website to “steal” your potential clients.

Where can you get your domain from? A few of the top places are Go Daddy, Network Solutions, and Google Domains.  After you establish your domain with one of these services, put your domain on auto renew so that you never lose it.  Unfortunately, if you forget to renew, there are crawlers out there ready to snatch it up and then charge you thousands of dollars to get it back.
The key to domain names is to pick a good name and then secure it. So find a domain name,  secure all the .com, .biz, .info, .org, and pay (on average) $12-15/month.  Then hit auto renewal. Find a good secure website host. And then you are ready to get on the internet, and you don’t have to think about securing your domain name again!
You are now free to create a website and get it up online!!!!
